UX Isn’t Just for Apps—It’s Everywhere
Let’s talk about something that drives us a little crazy: the "creativity trap."
The other day, I saw a bathroom sign that was so "creatively designed" that nobody actually knew which door to enter. It was a masterpiece of graphic design, but a disaster of User Experience (UX). It failed the most basic test: it didn’t answer the user's question.
When you’re designing a product, a website, or a service, your goal isn't to show off how clever you are. It’s to answer the user's silent prayer: "I wish it were like this."
Why UX Has Nothing to do With Aesthetics
There is a massive misconception that UX design is just about making things "pretty." It’s not. Pretty is a bonus; UX is a mandate.
Take Apple’s rounded corners. Are they aesthetically pleasing? Sure. But look closer—they are also ergonomic. They don't dig into your palms when you hold the device. The design serves a function and a feeling. As a brand, your goal isn't to choose between beauty and utility—it’s to achieve both.
A beautiful app that you can’t navigate is just a piece of digital art—useless for the user. A functional app that looks terrible feels like an afterthought. You need to marry the two.
UX is the Ultimate Form of "I Care"
Think about it: your customers are paying for your services. Every time they interact with your digital presence, they are taking time out of their day to engage with you.
If your UX is clunky, confusing, or "creatively" weird, you’re basically telling your customer: "I value my ego more than your time."
When you get the UX right, you aren't just selling a product; you’re showing respect. You’re telling them that you’ve thought about their frustrations, their questions, and their goals before they even had to ask.
The Secret to Great UX: Visualization
To deliver this, you have to be obsessive about visualizing the user's journey. Before a single pixel is placed, ask yourself:
- What is the user trying to do right now?
- What is the specific question they are asking in their head at this exact moment?
- How can I answer that question with zero friction?
Stop trying to be clever. Start trying to be helpful.
